Let’s face it. The college lifestyle- not so big on healthy eating. Classes. Frats. Job searches. Parties. Laundry (yeah right). Cramming. Eating healthy? – Who has the time? And no thanks to College campuses- they definitely don’t make it any easier to eat right. Temptation is everywhere (and at every hour). At dining halls, gear up for the latest fried and greasy concoction. On every street corner, satisfy “late night cravings” at 24-hour food joints. And how convenient- cookies and milk can be delivered right to your door. The freshman fifteen is not a myth: it’s a reality.
As a nutrition major myself- I too find it hard to eat healthy at college. Like most students, I LOVE food. I am what dictionary.com defines as a “foodie.” I think, talk, plan, speak, and even dream (yes I said dream) about food. If I’m watching TV, place your bet that it’s the Food Network channel. However food equals calories and calories well, they quickly add up. It would be nice to live in a world where there were no calories, no artery-clogging foods, no brownies, cookies, or cake that end up on your thighs. But sadly this world does not exist. Time to face the facts. My love for food is not something that will disappear, but how I eat at school and how active I am is something I can control.
I started this blog to share my experience as a student trying to eat healthy and stay fit in college- not a simple task as most of us know. I will share my daily encounters with food, attempts at cooking, adventures at the grocery store, and my commitment to stay in shape all while on a budget, with little spare time, surrounded by social pressure, and still eating the foods I love. Get ready for quick tips, easy recipes, and the latest finds in nutrition.
Now is the time to be fit, fab, and still love being a college foodie.
Keep it Healthy,
Ms. College Foodie
